Sri Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple
Sri Chenna Kesava Swamy Temple is a famous temple dedicated
to Lord Vishnu. It is situated in the Cuddapah district of Andhra Pradesh. The
temple is located on the banks of Penna River. The temple is currently under the
protection of Central Archaeological Survey of India.

Legend
According to the legends, once Garuda was carrying a pot of nectar from the kingdom of
heaven, to relieve his mother from sufferings. On his way, Garuda met Indra and
they had an argument. Indra attacked Garuda. During the fight a drop of nectar
fell into the tank in this place, which in turn acquired the property of
causing rejuvenation and immortality. Brahma the creator of life was
discredited and thereupon, sage Narada advised Hanuman to drop a hill to cover
the tank. When he did so, the hill instead of sinking floated on the water like
a flower. This accounts for the significance of the place.
Architecture
The entrance area of temple has been decorated by 5 tiered
Gopuram. The walls of this pilgrimage have sculptures constructed by limestone.
The temple of Chennakesava is an artistic structure with three Shrines inside
and two sub-shrines outside of the elevated platform. The shrines inside the
platform has the main deity of Chennakesava and Shrine to the left dedicated
for a Shiva Linga. The shrine of Chennakesava faces west and houses an idol of
standing Chennakesava Swamy towering at almost 10 feet. There is a sacred
theertham within the temple premises called as Amrutha Sarovar.
