Legend

According to the legends, once Nandi, the sacred bull of Shiva, did not respect the gatekeepers of Vishnu. They cursed Nandi that his body would suffer oppressive heat. Nandi informed it to Lord Shiva, who advised him to do penance in Shenbaranyam. Vishnu was impressed by the penance of Nandi and relieved him from curse. Hence the place is also called as 'Thiru Nandhipura Vinnagaram' and even the Theertham (the temple tank) of this temple is called as Nandhi Theertham.
