Mariyamman Temple
Mariamman Temple was owned and maintained by Ooralars of the
region. The temple is datable to the 13th Century, though the origin of the
temple is unknown. The administration of the temple was taken over by Batheri
Maha Ganapathi Kshetra Committee in 1972.

Legend
The presiding deity, Mariyamma, is believed to have control
over epidemic diseases, particularly small pox and chicken pox. The Goddess is
a favourite among Tamil-speaking population and Adivasis of Wayanad. The temple
had rituals like sacrifice of cocks till recently.
Architecture
Mariamman Temple structures include Sreekovil, namaskara
mandapam, nadapanthal, thidappalli and other administrative buildings. The
rectangular Sreekovil is of nirandhara type, facing north. There are exquisite
carvings on the pillars of namaskara mandapam, like the images of two
Deva-kanyas, a Brahmin and a trident. A stone inscription in Vattezhuthu, which
is yet to be deciphered, is seen on the northern side of the Sreekovil.
Culture
The culture of Wayanad, mainly, can be related to the tribal
culture. This place is home to a huge population of Adivaasis or tribal people.
Some of the main tribes that live here include Adiyars, Paniyas, Kurumas,
Kattunaikar and Kadans along with a few other ones.

The rites and rituals of the temple are similar to that of
Mariyamman Temples in Tamil Nadu.

Temple Rituals
The sila idol of Goddess Mariyamma is in sitting pose, with
four arms holding snake, sword, trident and lotus. The sankalpa is of Goddess
in fierce nature. There are no other idols in the temple.
