The devout congregation
Legend
Mythology associates the legend of Kumbh mela with the 'Samudhramanthan' or churning of the celestial ocean. The gods and demons had churned the milky ocean for the jar containing "amrita", the nectar of immortality. When the jar emerged from the ocean, the gods and demons clashed for its possession. For twelve days and twelve nights they were engaged in the battle . During this conflict, Garuda flew with the pitcher and four drops of the invaluable potion fell to earth. These places became the sites of the four Kumbha Melas. First written evidence of the Kumbha Mela were found in the writings of Chinese traveller, Hiuen Tsang who visited India in 629 -645 CE.
