Located in the holy city of Tirupati in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Kodandaramaswamy Temple is a one of the famous temple dedicated to Lord Rama along with Devi Sita and Lakshmana. Believed to be built in the 10th century, during the reign of Chola kings, it has been maintained and developed by many kingdoms. It was developed in 15th Century by Sri Krishna Deva Raya of Vijayanagara dynasty.

Legend

According to the legends, when Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Lord Lakshmana were returning to Ayodhya, they had stayed at this place for a night.According to another legend, there was an ancient cave, radiating with incomparable glow. When asked about the source of light inside the cave, Lord Rama had replied that the brightness is due to the divine presence in the cave. Later, when Jambavan went inside, he saw an idol which was emanating the divine glow. This later became as Sri Kodandarama Swamy temple.Another legend states that this temple was built when Lord Rama paid a visit to Lord Sri Venkateswara Swamy. It was constructed to celebrate the divine meeting.

Architecture

The temple was built based on the dravidian style of construction. The symbols of Kodandarama Swamy Temple and Raja mudrikas of Vijaya Nagara dynasty can be seen on the rock walls of the outer Mandapas. The temple has a tall and royal compound wall. The idols of main deities of the temple Lord Rama, Goddess Sita and Sri Lakshmana are in a standing position.

Culture

Tirupati is the famous temple town and because of that all the major Hindu festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, Sankranti, Kartik Purnima and Deepawali are celebrated with great grandeur in Tirupati. The main festival of the town is the nine-day festival of Sri Venkateswara Brahmotsavams. This is an annual celebration that draws in lakhs of devotees. Tirupati Ganga Jatara is an important carnival that is held every year in May. Historical and architectural artefacts are kept in the Sri Venkateswara Museum. The city is famous for its prasadam - the delicious Tirupati (Thirupathi) Laddu.

Temple Rituals

Morning pooja and arathi starts from 05:30 AM onwards; there after astothram and seva's to be performed inside the temple.

Unjal Seva on Every Saturday.

Sri Chaturbuja Lakshmi Ammavaru: Every Friday, Abhishekam  is performed to the Goddess.

Sri Prasanna Anjaneya Swamy: On every Saturday Abhishekam  is performed to the Lord. In addition there is a ‘Palanquin seva’  round the inner precinct of the main temple by the devotees.

On every Pournami day Annadanam is carried out by the Sri Kodandaramaswamy Charitable Trust, the devotees visiting the temple are fed on that day.

On every Friday prior to the 'New Moon Night' 'Palanquin seva' round the inner precinct of the main temple is offered to the Goddess Sri Chaturbuja Lakshmi ammavaaru.

On 'Punarvasu' star day abhishekam is performed to the main deities Sri Kodandarama Swamy, Sethammavaaru, Lakshmana Swamy in the temple.
