Located in West Bengal, Kalighat Kali Temple is a famous
temple dedicated to Goddess Kali. It is one of the 52 Shakti Peethas of India.
In the 16th century, King Manasingha built the small hut temple of Goddess Kali
that was known to be the original temple of Kali Maa. Later on, the zamindars
from the Sabarna Roy Chowdhury family of Barisha created the present Kalighat
Kali temple in 1809.

Legend
Kalighat Kali Temple is one of the 51 Shakti Peeths.
According to the legends, it is believed that the toe of Devi Sati fell here
after the Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu mutilated the lifeless body of Sati
from the clutch of Lord Shiva, Her consort.
This temple is part of the famous Shaktipeetha Darshan Yatra
of West Bengal and Shaktipeethas.
Architecture
The premise of
Kalighat Kali Temple includes the main Sanctum Sanctorum, and the Nat
Mandir (the hall from where the devotees offer the prayers and the puja.) The
half bust idol of the Goddess is visible. The widened tongue of the divine
mother is made of pure gold. Besides there are temple like Nakuleswar Mahadev- her Consort, Radha Krishna, Shani
maharaj, Sosti tala, Sitola Mandir, Kundu Pukur and the Ghat by the Adi Ganga
(a canal of the Bhagirathi River.)
