Harshat Mata Temple
Situated in Abhaneri, is the shrine of Harshat Mata, which
was built by 8th century ruler, King Chand of Chahamana dynasty. Harshat Mata,
a form of Durga is know as the Goddess of joy and happiness. Over time, the
temple was destroyed by various Mughal invasions. The temple has been rebuilt
with the destroyed fragments that the locals collected. Though it could never
reach its old splendor, the shrine exemplifies the many chapters through the
history of the land

Legend
Harshat Mata is considered to be the goddess of joy and
happiness. Local beliefs suggests that the goddess is always cheerful, and
spreads her cheer to the whole village.
Architecture
On an elevated plinth stands the stone structure of Harshad
Mata temple. A series of steps lead to
the temple having a dome roof with flags flying on the top. It has a pillared
hall, sanctum and garbha griha. Carved figures adorn the shrine. Originally
built in Mahameru style, many of the sculptures and carved figures in the
temple have been destroyed during the Mughal invasions. The statue of goddess
Harshat is protected from all sides by boundary made of iron by the department
of archaeology.

There is an annual fair held in the temple, celebrating the
divinity of Harshat Mata that lasts three days and sees numerous devotees
gather from neighbouring villages.
