Revered by the royal family as well as the common people, the temple of Ambamata in Udaipur is dedicated to the divinity of Ambika devi and is closely linked with the Amba Mata temple in Gujarat. There are many devotees in the area who do not start any work before offering their prayers here. The royal family has a tradition of visiting the temple on second navratri. The temple was built by Maharana Raj Singh in the 17th century. He also gifted the surrounding lands to the temple.

Legend

The legend of the temple is associated with Maharana Raj Singh of the 17th century, an ardent devotee of Ambamata. An incurable eye disease continued to ail him, for which he was advised to visit the temple of the Goddess in Gujarat. That night, he had a dream in which the Goddess appeared and told him not to make the journey, instead she was coming to Mewar. She then gave instructions to dig a particular site, doing which they found an idol of Ambamata. The ruler was cured as he lay his eyes on the idol. The Maharana, then started construction of a temple to celebrate the holiness of the deity.

Architecture

The temple is made of white stone, built according to Vastu Shastra and is constructed on a 20 ft high platform. Steps lead to this pristine shrine, which has the entrance with golden lions on the either side. The platform where the idol put its foot for the first time is called Charanpatka or Charanpaduka. It is under a neem tree outside the temple. The mandap or the hall has a door decked with coloured glass. The main temple enshrines the idol of Ambamata.
