Situated in Triprayar, Thrissur, Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple
is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Rama. The diety in the Triprayar Temple
is popularly known as Triprayarappan or Triprayar Thevar. Here, the idol of Lord
Rama is seen with four arms with bearing a conch, a disc, a bow and a garland.

Legend
According to the legends, it is believed that the idol of
Lord Rama was woshipped by Lord Krishna. The idol was immersed in the sea after
the swargarohana of Lord Krishna. The idol was later found by some fisher men
from the sea near Chettuva region of Kerala. The local ruler Vakkayil Kaimal
constructed a temple at Triprayar and installed the idol there.
This temple is part of the famous Nalambala Darshana Yatra.
Architecture
Triprayar Sree Rama Temple is rich in wood carvings. The
namaskara mandapam which faces the circular sanctum (srikovil) has 24 panels of
wood carvings and several ancient murals.
The circular sanctum has several sculptural representations of scenes
from the Ramayana.
Culture
The border area between Ernakulam and Thrissur districts is
the cultural hub of the State, with a rich history of producing some of the
best classical performing artistes like Ammannur Madhava Chakyar. It is also rich
in old temples, showing the deep rooted culture.

Temple Rituals
Triprayar Sree Rama Temple is famous for freeing people from
evil spirits. It is believed that by making different offerings to appease
Thriprayarappan, people can be cured of evil influence. And hence the name
Chathan Bhandaram. Firing of kathinas or Vedi vazhipadu is an important
offering here. It is to commemorate the return of Hanuman after the search of
Sita, with the words, 'Drishta Sita'-seen Sita. This offering is believed to
help easy and comfortable pregnancy. Feeding the fishes in Purayar river
flowing in front of the temple is another main offering here. It is believed
that the fishes are the pets of Triprayar Thevar and feeding them will please
Him. Usually Meen Oottu is offered to reduce the discomfort of Asthma patients
and for improving their health.
Special Rituals
Performing Chakyar Koothu is a special ritual at Triprayar
Sree Rama Temple . It is said that the practice started when once Zamorin
wished to watch Hanuman's mischiefs at Lanka in detail and the performance went
on for twelve days then. Till then, the custom was that Koothu would be
performed with at least one Brahmin in the audience. Once there was not Brahmin
and the Chakyar was at a loss when an aside was heard from inside the Sreekovil
saying that 'Koothu is not for Brahmins but for me. Therefore perform Koothu in
my presence.' Since then Koothu, which was, being staged in the specially
erected Koothambalam on the south-east corner of the temple started being
staged in the mandapa itself inside the temple.
