Legend
According to the legends, once Yamraj was angry as he was
not receiving any human from Kamrup because of the Kamakhya Temple. Even the
sinners were passed to the heaven because of the holiness of the place. Yamraj
complained to the Holy Trinity and Lord Shiva later on
ordered Ugro Tara to drive Her sena out from Kamrup to balance the equation of
life and death. Unknowingly, the sena laid their hands on Rishi Vasishtha and
Vasishtha became angry. He cursed Ugra Tara and Shiva. From then onwards all
the Vedic sadhanas are given up in Kama rupa and Ugra Tara became a Goddess of
Vamachara sadhana.
Architecture
The medieval touch is found in the temple architecture.
There is no idol of devi Ugro Tara inside the temple. There is only a pot full
of water kept inside the sanctorum. The devotees pray this Holy water as Devi
Ugro Tara maata.
