Located in Sringeri, Karnataka, Sri Sharadamba Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Goddess Saraswati. The temple was founded by Sri Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th century. Sri Adi Shankarachaya installed a sandalwood statue of Shardamba in a standing posture installed over the Sri Chakra that Adi Shankara carved on a rock until the Vijayanagara rulers and Sri Vidyaranya (12th Jagadguru) installed a seated gold statue of Sri Shardamba in the 14th century.

Legend

Architecture

Initially the Temple was built in the Kerala style, with timber and tiled roof. The present structure in granite was raised later with polished granite walling around the sanctum. The Mahamandapam has huge stone pillars exquisitely carved with deities like Durga, Raja Rajeshwari, Dwarapalakas and Devis which are all sculpted according to the Shilpa Sastras practised in Tamilnadu. The entrance of the sanctum sanctorum of Sri Sharada temple have Golden doors; the eight panels of which have the figures of Ashta Lakshmi inscribed on them.

Sringeri is a taluk and pilgrimage centre located in the banks of Holy River Tunga in Chickmagalur district of Karnataka state. Sringeri is the important religious center for Hindus. Sringeri is the first of the four mathas established by the renowned 8th century Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya.
