Situated in Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, Sri Ranganthaswami Temple is a one of the famous and oldest temple dedicated to Lord Ranganatha, a form of Lord Vishnu. Located on the banks of the Penna River, this temple is also known as Talpagiri Ranganathaswami temple or Ranganayakulu. The temple was built in 7th century by Pallava kings and later developed by the king Raja Mahendra Varma in the 12th century. The main shrine and further extensions of the temple were built during the Cholas rule in the 12th Century AD and the grand Raja Gopuram was built in the 1800s.

Legend

According to the legends, once Lord Vishnu along with his consort Goddess Sridevi wanted to visit earth. SO Lord Vishnu said Adisesha to be the place as His residence at Earth. Adisesha took the form of a mountain in this place and thus this place is called as Talpagiri Kshethra. It is also believed that sage Kashyapa performed Poundarika Yaga on Ekadasi day and Lord appeared before him and blessed him.

Architecture

The temple is built according to Dravidian style of architecture. There is a huge tower, called Gaaligopuram just before the main entrance of the temple. The Gaaligopuram is approximately 70 feet high and has 10 feet of gold-plated vessels on top of it, called kalashams. The 70 feet high 7 storied main entrance gateway Gopura appears huge. The 1000 different names of Lord Vishnu (Sri Vishnu Sahasranamavali) are penned on the walls of sanctum sanctorum. There is a mirror house which stands as an attraction for the devotees. There is a separate shrine of Goddess Rajya Lakshmi Devi to the south of the main temple and Goddess Andal Ammavari shrine to the north.

Culture

The culture of Nellore is very much similar to the culture of Andhra Pradesh. Annamayya, Kuchipudi and Tyagaraja which summarize the artistic traditions of Andhra Pradesh also characterizes the culture of Nellore. Even today, people in Nellore, like other parts of Andhra practice these forms religiously. Telugu language has been developed by numerous contributors and Nellore along with the rest of Andhra Pradesh also featured prominently in the Telegu language.
