Sri Karinjeshwara temple is a popular pilgrimage center situated in the Bantwal taluka of Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka. The temple is situated in the midst of lush green Kodyamale hills. The temple dedicated for lord Shiva is on the top of a cliff and another temple, which is dedicated for the goddess Parvathi is situated in the middle of the way to the cliff.

Legend

According to the legends, Lord Ram had visited this temple along with Lakshman. Lord Ram made rice and offered it to Lord Shiva during the noon pooja. After the offering, Lord Ram poured the rice on a rock slab in front of the Shiva temple for monkeys.  Till today it is the custom to give the rice prasadam to the monkeys.

Architecture

The architectural style of the Shiva Temple is influenced by both Vaishnav and Jain styles of architecture. There is a stone sculpture on the base of the flag post of the temple by the Kelady rulers that indicates their royal patronage to this temple. A devotee will have to climb as many as 555 steps in order to reach the Sri Karinjeshwara temple.
