On the banks of Tungabadhra, where the coracles float by in
the rippling waters, stands one of the Maha Shakthi peetha where Goddess Sati's
jaw is believed to have fallen. The Goddess of Jogulamba is Ugra rupa, fierce
and hard to please. The original temple was razed during the Muslim invasion.
The locals hid the idol in the nearby Bala Brahmeshwara temple. The new temple
was built in 2005 on the spot where the old shrine stood.

Legend
The legend of the Shakthipeethas is associated with the
immolation of Sati devi. When her father Daksha insulted her husband Shiva,
Sati jumped into the yang fire and immolated herself. Shiva, his wrath
manifesting as Veerabadhara killed Daksha. The Lord's ire then translated into
the celestial dance, the Tandava, and the universe trembled under his feet.
Lord Vishnu, with his Sudarshana Chakra cut the corpse of Sati into various
bits, to calm the Lord down. The body parts fell at various parts of the sub continent
where rose temples dedicated to her divinity. In Alampur, where the Devi's
upper jaw fell, stands the temple of Jogulamba.
This temple is part of famous Shaktipeethas.
Architecture
The new temple of Jogulamba was constructed in 2005. It
follows the Dravidian style of architecture and has a tiered gopuram adorned
with colourful sculptures. The idol of Devi is in a sitting position and has a
huge amount of hair. There is a lizard,
scorpion, bat and human skull in it.
