location Andhra Pradesh, Anantapur, Amaravathi
Legend
According to the temple legends, it is believed that Lord
Parashurama lived here and worshipped Lord Siva. The Chintala Venkatramana
temple is of 6th century and belongs to the Vijayanagar period.
Architecture
The outer walls of the temple are elaborately decorated with
carvings depicting stories of Lord Rama, Lord Krishna and other forms of Lord
Vishnu. The Mukhamantapa of the temple has forty beautifully carved pillars
varying in design. The idol of Lord Venkataramana Swamy is a classical master
piece of the Vijayanagar Kingdom. There are two other temples inside the
complex, one dedicated to Lord Vishnu's consort and the other to Lord Anjaneya.
There is a secret underground passage (king's passage) in the temple leading to
the Gooty fort. At present, the tunnel's entrance from the temple has been
closed by the ASI. There is a pillar that stands tall in the garden maintained
right opposite the temple. There is also a Thulabharam pillar (weigh scale), a
typical trademark of the Vijayanagar Kingdom in the garden.
Culture
Tadipatri has two notable temples within the town, the Sri
Chintala Venkata Ramana Swamy temple and the Sri Bugga Rama Lingeswara Swamy
temple. The sthala puranam, or local history, says that these two temples were
built in a day by two brothers. The Chintala Venkata Ramana Swamy temple was
completed by the next morning but the Bugga Rama Lingeswara Swamy temple wasn't
complete. The belief is that had this temple been completed it would have been
'Dakshina Kaashi', or Kaashi of the South. The architecture of these two
temples is largely Dravidian and reflects the Vijayanagara style.Tadipatri got
its name from Tatipatri which means garden of palm trees. Another version is
that Tataki, a demon lady who tried to kill Sreeram on his way to save the yaga
of Viswamitra but was killed by Sreeram at this very place and hence the name.
