Boyakonda Gangamma Temple is situated at Diguvapalli, Chowdepalli(mandal), Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh. The temple is dedicated to Goddess Gangamma, an incarnation of Shakti. According to the Purana, the Sri Gangamma Temple is dedicated to the sister of the Lord Sri Venketeswara Swamy. The Gangamma temple was taken over by Endowments Department of Andhra Pradesh in 1990.

Legend

According to the legends, Gangamma devi was the main deity of two tribal groups known as Boyas and Yelikas, who used to live in the forest surrounding the hill. During the Navab invasion from the North, the two tribes united to fight back the attackers. However, the tribal army cannot match with the trained and groomed army of Navab. Therefore, they retreated back to the forest and prayed to Gangamma devi to help them. It is believed that Goddess Shakti took a physical form to crush the invading Navab soldiers. After the battle, the tribal group built the Gangamma Temple.

Architecture

There is a huge well below the temple, and the water is believed to cure many skin ailments. Temple walls are constructed with sand soap. The internal temple mandapam has marble flooring.
