Architecture

The temple of Someshwara in Kolar is an architectural feast for the eyes. Starting from the mammoth gopuram (the temple gates of the South Indian temples) to the main sanctum sanctorum- every corner of the edifice explains the exquisite architectural tastes the Dravidian rulers had. The Cholas built the temple during the 11th century and later on the Chalukyas expanded the structure by creating the pillars inside the halls with the quintessential Vijaywadan style of architecture. The noteworthy spots within the sanctum that awe the devotees are the Mukha Mandapa, the heavy Prakara walls, Kalyana Mantapa, Vasantha Mantapa along with the Vijanagara style of inscribing the dwarapalas. There is also a stepped tank inside the temple which is a flagship to Vijaywadan style, known as Kalyani. It is the stupendous architecture of the magnaninous edifice that entice visitors till date.
