Legend
According to the legends, Sage Narada was humiliated by
behavior of Lord Vishnu in the disguise of Mohini and Narada cursed Lord Vishnu
that he would feel the agony of separation of his beloved. In Treta Yuga, Lord
Vishnu and Goddess Laxmi was incarnated as Sita and Rama. While they were in
exile, Rama got separated from his wife Sita when Ravana abducted her. Later,
Lord Rama killed Ravana and took Sita back to Ayodhya. However, Lord Rama was
made to prove chastity of his wife, Sita as she had spent a long time in Lanka.
To maintain the public sentiment, Lord Rama sent his pregnant wife, Sita to
forest where she stayed in the Ashrama of Sage Valmiki. Sita gave birth to Luv
and Kusha. Years later, Lord Rama performed the AshwamedhaYajna to prove his
might over other rulers as per the traditions. However, Luv and Kusha captured
the Ashwa (Horse). Luv and Kush fought with the army and brothers of Rama and
later Rama himself reached the place where his horse was tied. There he get to
know about his sons, Luv and Kush from the Sage Valmiki. Lord Rama asked Sita
and his sons to return to Ayodhya. However, Sita was again asked to establish
her chastity before the people of Ayodhya. As Sita couldn’t bear the
humiliation anymore, she asked her mother Earth to take her with herself. Upon
her request, the earth erupted and Sita was submerged into it. The author of
Ram Charit Manas , Goswami Tulsidas had visited this place while travelling
from Varanasi (Kashi) to Allahabad (Prayag) and stayed here for three days. He
described the location of Sitamarhi between Baripur and Digpur. The two
villages still exist and testify the location. He explained the location in his
Kavitawali Uttarkand couplet 138.
