Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Siddhivinayaka Mahaganapati Temple is famous temple situated in Titwala in the Kalyan taluk of Thane district, Maharashtra. The temple also houses the shrines of Lord Shiva and Goddess Laxmi. It is believed that this ancient temple was constructed by Shakuntala, daughter of sage Vishwamitra and the celestial damsel Menaka. Submerged under a tank, the temple was found buried during the rule of Peshwa Madhavrao. The image of the Lord Ganesha buried in the silt was discovered by Peshwasardar Ramchandra Mehendale. A stone temple was built on that site and the installation of the image of Lord Ganesha was conducted by Peshwa Madhavrao. Later, a new temple was constructed at the same location in 1965-66.

Legend

According to the legends, this village was part of Dandakaranya forest where the Katkari tribe lived and Sage Kanva had his hermitage here. Sage Kanva adopted Shakuntala who was abandoned immediately after the birth by her parents, sage Vishwamitra and the celestial damsel Menaka. It is at this place where Shakuntala met King Dushyanta of Gandhara Kingdom while he was passing through the forests. They fell in love with each other and got married according to the Gandharva rite (exchanging garlands as a marriage vow). Dushyanta went back to his kingdom after sometime and before leaving he gave Shakuntala a ring as a sign of their love, promising her that he would return for her. Days went by, once while Shakuntala was in the hermitage thinking about her husband Dushyanta, she did not pay attention to the sage Durvasa who came there at that time. Sage Durvasa became angry and cursed Shakuntala saying that the person she was dreaming of would forget about her altogether. Later, Durvasa toned down his curse that the person who had forgotten Shakuntala would remember everything again if she showed him a personal token that had been given to her. As per the curse, Dushyanta refused to recognise her. Sage Kanva asked Shakuntala to build a shrine for Lord Ganesha and assured her that her sincere prayers will be answered by the Siddhi Vinayaka and she would once again join her husband Dushyanta.This eventually came true and by the blessings of Lord Ganesha, Shakuntala rejoined with Dushyanta.

Architecture

The current temple is built on 3–5 acres land donated by the Peshwas, which was further supplemented by 12 acres of additional land donated by Joshis, the hereditary priests of the temple. The existing audience hall, after renovation, measures 90 feet (27 m)x45 feet (14 m) and has been provided with galleries that overlook the main hall. The raised platform on which temple has been built with stone is 3.5 feet (1.1 m) in height. The temple hall has marble flooring. On the right of the main entrance door is a shrine containing a Shiva-linga. There is an impressive lamp tower in front of the temple. The temple Shikhara (pinnacle) is decorated with sculptures of the Ashtavinayaka, central images from eight revered Ganesha temples near Pune, Maharashtra.

Siddhivinayaka Mahaganapati Temple remains operational every day from 5:00 AM to 1:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 9:00 PM. It remains open from 4:00 PM to 11:00 PM for sankashti and chaturthi. Meanwhile, the temple also remains open from Monday midnight to Tuesday midnight on Angarika chaturthi.

Famous Festival

Angarika Chaturthi (Angariki) – a Tuesday that follows on the fourth day of the lunar bright fortnight. Ganesh Chaturthi and Ganesh Jayanti are also celebrated here on a wide scale, when more than 500,000 people come to worship in the temple.

Temple Rituals

Morning pooja performed to Lord Ganesh at 05:30 AM and aarti conducts two times in a day, and the prasad involves a coconut, mudi packet, flowers and agarbatti that are easily available outside the premises.
