Located in the Kanker District, Chhattisgarh, Shivani Temple
also known as Shivani Maa Temple is a famous temple dedicated to a combination
of two Goddesses, Durga Maa and Kali Maa. It is one of the oldest temples in the city.
Legend
According to the legends, the chief deity of this temple is
a combination of two Goddesses, Kali Maa and Durga Maa. The vertically half
part is of Goddess Kali and the remaining half part is of goddess Durga. This
type of statue is only two in numbers in whole world. One is in Kolkata and
another is in Kanker.
Architecture
The structure of the temple portrays the ancient style of
building temples and reflects an ethnic and traditional look. It is said that
if one considers the idol in a vertical manner, one half is Goddess Kali, the
remaining half being that of Goddess Durga. Such architectural grandeur of an
idol is only present in two places in the world- one here in Kanker,
Chhattisgarh and the other is in Kolkata.
Culture
Culture of Kanker District includes the indigenous religion
and beliefs of the local people. The culture of Kanker District is
predominantly tribal as this region is mainly inhabited by several tribal
communities. There were around 62 castes in Bastar and Kanker provinces. The
major tribes of this district are Maria, Muria, Bhatra, Parja, Gadva, Halba
Tribe, Mahra, Chandal, Ghuruva, Dom, Lohar, Matrigond, Rajgond, Dorla, Nahar,
Naikpod, Kuduk, Andkuri, Kumhar, Kosta, Chamar, Kenvat and Dhakad tribes.
