In the small town of Ranjangaon, resides one of the most
compelling forms of Lord Ganesh, the Mahaganapati. The deity so powerful, so
dynamic, that the villagers do not bring home Ganapathi idols during the Ganesh
Chaturthi festival but personally visit the temple itself. Mythology suggests
that the temple was created by Lord Shiva himself. As with other Ashtavinayak
temples, the idol is 'swayambhu'. The temple structure was erected during the
rule of Peshwas. Madhavrao Peshwa constructed the sanctum and it is believed
that he would offer prayers at Ranjangaon Mahaganapati Temple before he rode to
war.

Legend
Tripurasura, wrecked havoc on the earth arrogant by the boon
he received that he would die only at the hands of Shiva. On the request of the
Gods, Lord Shiva tried in vain to kill Tripurasura. Shiva realised that he was
unsuccessful in his efforts because he had not paid respects to Lord Ganesha.
Once he invoked Ganesh with Sankatanashan stotra, Lord Gajanana blessed him and with a single arrow Shiva killed
Tripurasura. It is believed that the
place where Lord Shiva invoked Lord Ganesha and defeated Tripurasura is
Ranjangaon.
This Temple is part of famous Ashtavinayak Yatra
Architecture
The Ranjangaon Mahaganapati Temple faces east. It has a
striking main gate guarded by two statues of Jaya and Vijay. During
Dakshinayan, the design of the temple effects the rays of the sun falling
directly on the deity. The idol of Ganesha in a crossed legged sitting position
with the trunk toward the left is flanked by Riddhi and Siddhi. The stone
pillars of old temple signals resemblance with 9th or 10th century
architecture.
