Situated in Piravom, Ernakulam, Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil is a famous temple in Kerala dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple dates back to 12th century AD. It is believed that the work of this temple was done by Perumthachan.

Legend

According to the legend, long ago the area was home for many Brahmin families. The children belonging to these Brahmin families had a very strict teacher. The kids believed that the teacher was being too harsh on them because he had no child. So the kids made an idol out of sand and 'payal' (weed) and prayed to God for blessing their teacher with a kid. Pleased by their devotion, the god granted their wish. The idol made out of 'paayal' won the place name 'Payaloor', which later became 'Pazhoor'.

Architecture

The Pazhoor Perumthrikkovil is a sandhara-type temple with cardinal doors on four sides. The plinth and wall together are of granite stone work and the rest of timber and sheet roof in circular vimana. Dwarapalakas are made of wood. Main deity in the form of Siva Linga is facing east. The square ardhamandapa has got beautiful wood carvings on the ceiling. Pranala is ornate with a standing Yakshi bearing at its tip. Wood carvings display exquisite mastery over the art, while depicting episodes from Bhagavata, Ramayana and Mahabharata. The temple is surrounded on three sides by Muvattupuzha River.

Culture

The area is renowned for its ancient Vedic culture. The village is reputed to be the renowned Ashtagruhas or place for eight famous Brahmin families. Originally, there were 41 families but now only 16 remain. Out of them, Mel-Pazhoor is believed to be the maternal illam of Sree Adi Sankaracharya.

Pazhoor Siva Temple is open from 4:30 AM to 10 AM and from 4:30 PM to 8 PM. While the main idol of Lord Shiva is made of sand, idol of Lord Ganapati is of Pancha Loha (alloy of five metals), and all other idols of Lord Krishna, Bhagavati, Lord Sastha, Nagaraja, Nagayakshi and Nagakanyaka are in granite. Bhagavati's idol is of mirror type.

Temple Rituals

The tantri of the temple is from Puliyanoor Mana. The temple observes strict Vedic rituals. Pazhoor Siva Temple is surrounded on three sides by Muvattupuzha river and the entry to northern end is restricted to priests. Water for temple purposes is drawn from this point, as it is supposed to have properties of Ganga.

Special Rituals

Sivaratri observance is considered very auspicious. A temporary bridge is built across the river from the sand bank to the centre of the riverbed. On Sivaratri day, thousands of devotees offer pitrutharpan here.
