Legend

According to the legends, Mahabali, the demon reached the zenith of power, fame and prosperity in life due to his observance of an austere and virtuous lifestyle. He performed many ritual sacrifices and Yagna to consolidate his sway over the three worlds. Once Mahabali conducted a yagna and Lord Vishnu appeared there as Lord Vamana and requested the king to give him three paces of land. King Mahabali promised Vamana to give the land. Lord Vamana grew to immense size and covered the heavens with one single step and the earth with another. As there was no space left to measure the third pace, Vamana asked Mahabali as to where to put the third pace. Realizing that the the Vamana is none other than Lord Vishnu, Mahabali offered his own head to place the third pace.Lord Vishnu was immensely pleased with the goodness of Mahabali. He educated Bali about the demerits of pride and arrogance, which forbids man from optimum progress. Lord Vishnu allowed Mahabali to take shelter in the Paradise of the sacred abode and blessed Mahabali that he would be the ruler of the earth in the following age or Yuga.
