Sitauated in Kunjathurm Kasargod, Kunjathur Sri Mahalingeshwara temple is one of the most famous ancient temples dedicated to Lord Shiva. It has a history of over thousand years. For twelve years from 1960 to 1972 the

temple had no daily poojas. The renovation of the Kunjathur Mahalingeswara Temple was done in 1972 and brahmakalasam was done in January 1974. But the daily poojas were restored as late as 1989.

It is believed that in Treta Yuga, Kharaasura brought three Siva Lingas, of which the one he was carrying was consecrated here, the one he held in left hand at Mulinje and the one he was holding by mouth at Badaaje.

Architecture

The main structure of Kunjathur Mahalingeswara Temple includes a dwi-thala sreekovil, namaskaramandapam and chuttambalam. The sreekovil faces east. There are six direct steps for the sopanam. Motifs of lion (simha) and kaavati are carved on sides of the sopanam. The grabha gruham has tiled roof.

Culture

Manjeswar is the northern most point of Kerala, bordering on Karnataka. The population is mostly agrarian or fisherfolk. The cultural blend of Karnataka and Kerala is very obvious here.

On the eastern side of the Kunjathur Mahalingeswara Temple is a pond known as Chakratheertham, which is associated with the Sage Kunja. It is believed that the name Kunjathoor evolved from the name of the Sage.

Temple Rituals

The main diety of Lord Siva is in the form of Linga and placed on a sila. The idol of Lord Ganapati is smaller. Raktheswari and Naga have only peethas, and Lord Sastha has only a sila as idol without any anthropomorphic form.

Special Rituals

Besides the main deity inside the Sreekovil, there is another small idol of Lord Siva in standing pose. This idol is used as 'utsava-moorthy'.
