In the town of Kundapura bound by Arabian sea on the west,
next to the 4 acre lake of Koti theertha stands the Koteshwara temple dedicated
to Lord Shiva. The temple is believed to have been created by Saint Parashurma
and is one of the 7 Parashurama Srishti Khetras. It is one of the seven
muktistala's of Karnataka. Lord Brahma is said to have worshiped
Kotilingeshwara here. The annual car festival during in the month of Vrishcika
attracts a large
number of people from all around the country.

Legend
According to the legends, one crore sages gathered in the
place and did penance to Lord Shiva. Immensely pleased with their devotion, the
Lord appeared in front of each of them. Thus the place came to be called
Kotee-eshwar(one crore God) which late became Koteshwar.
Architecture
The Koteshwara Temple is built in architectural style seen
in Kerala temples. The main shrine has the idol of Shiva Linga. The Shiva Linga
is armoured with a silver face of the Lord.
A huge Nandi bull made in stone stands facing the sanctum. There are
shrines dedicated to other Gods and Goddesses in the temple premises. A 4-acre
large Koti Theerth situated next to the temple is believed to have healing
properties.
Culture
Kundapura is a coastal town along the West surrounded by
water on three sides. It is a major religious centre with the focal point for
pilgrimages to Kollur Mookambika, Udupi and other temples in the area. The town
consists of mainly Hindus of many communities. Along with Kannada, Konkini and
Tulu are also spoken by the people here.
