Kanchi Kailasanathar Temple Kanchipuram
Located at Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, kanchi Kailasanathar
temple is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Being the oldest structure in
Kanchipuram, the temple is known for its historical importance. It was built
during 685-705 AD by a Rajasimha ruler of the Pallava Dynasty. The temple
contains 58 small shrines dedicated to various forms of Shiva.
Location TamilNadu, Kancheepuram, Chennai
Architecture
The architecture of the temple is a great example of the
Dravidian style of architecture. The temple is made out of sandstone. The
temple has retained the Pallava architecture in its original stylized form with
influence of the later styles developed by the Chola Dynasty and Vijayanagara
Emperors. It is stone built rather than the rock cut architecture built into
hallowed caves or carved into rock outcrops The temple's foundations are made
of granite while the structure above ground is made of sandstone. The temple
consists of a garbagriha (sanctum sanctorum), antarala (inner enclosure),
mandapa, a high compound wall, and an entrance gate.
Culture
Unfortunately, most of the cultural references to the temple
have been lost but devotees still relate to the religious and spiritual beliefs
represented in the ancient temples of Tamil Nadu. Various art forms from the
ancient age are still practised. The spiritual belief of life as a pathway is
represented by the circumambulatory passage around the temple. It represents
the human's journey from birth to death and beyond.
