Kali Devi Temple
Situated opposite Baradari garden on the Mall Road of
Patiala City is Shri Kali Mata Temple. This shrine was built in 1936 by the
ruler of the Patiala, Maharaja Bhupinder Singh who financed the building as
well as oversaw the installation there. He brought the idol of Goddess Kali
& Paawan Jyoti from Bengal to Patiala. He also offered the first sacrifice
of a water buffalo to the temple of Kali in Patiala. This large complex
attracts devotees, both Hindu and Sikh, from distant places.

Legend
The great Patiala maharajas were great promoters of art and
culture, and built many temples in the region. Maharaja Bhupinder Singh who
ruled from 1900 to 1938, is said to have been inspired by the Kali temple in
Bengal. He brought a 6ft statue and the sacred flame from Bengal to Patiala,
and erected the shrine of Kali Mata.
Architecture
The temple is built along the lines of architecture of the
Patiala rulers. The white and red round dome has the temple's red flag flying
atop. The walls of the temple have beautiful mural paintings depicting scenes
from the Hindu epics and mythology. The sanctum
has walls that are gold plated. Inside
the sanctum is the 6ft tall idol of Mata Kali She is dressed in red robes,
decked with a crown and flower garlands. An older temple to Raj Rajeshwari also
stands in the middle of the temple complex.

Patiala is associated with cultural beauty and elegance,
with the royals being considered cultural and political icons of the place..
The architecture of the city reflects their love for local traditions and arts.
Patiala has many sporting venues and the city has facilities for cricket,
swimming, shooting, skating and hockey.

5.00 AM to 9:30 PM (during summer)
5.00 AM to 9.00 PM (during winter).
The shrine is opened for an additional half an hour during
the night on Saturdays.
Saturday is a special day at the temple. Huge crowds gather
on Saturdays for the dasrhan to Kali Mata

Special Rituals
The shrine has a sacrificial altar in the form of a small
tank where people come and offer alcohol to pray for getting their loved ones
de-addicted. On an average around 60,000 bottles of alcohol are offered during
the 10 day festival of Navratra.
