Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, King of Barkagarh Jagannathpur took the endeavor to build Jagannath Mandir, the temple of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra in the 17th Century with the inspiration of the Puri Jagannath dham. The constrction of the temple was finished on the Christmas of 1691. The temple of Lord Jagannath is located at a distance of 10 Km from the main city on top of a hillock. Even today, this is one of the most popular places to visit in Ranchi. On 6th August 1990, the edifice of Jagannath Mandir collapsed but gradually it was restored and finally reopened on 8th February, 1992.

Architecture

The Jagannath temple at Ranchi was built by Thakur Ani Nath Shahdeo, the King of Barkagarh Jagannathpur in the 17th century following the architecture of the Puri Jagannath Dham temple. This huge temple at Ranchi was designed following the Kalinga style of temple architecture. The tall sanctum sanctorum is followed by the Jagamohana and the Nata Mandir. Inside garbha griha of the  white temple offered to Shri Jagannath Deva, the Lord is consecrated along with his elder brother Balabhadra or Balaram and Sister Subhadra.

Jagannath Mandir is open to devotees everyday from 5:00 AM - 12:00 PM and again from 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM.  As the temple is built up on a hillock, pilgrims have to climb several stairs to reach the shrine. But after reaching the temple, they are going to get the amazing view from the top.

Darsan Dresscode

There is no such restrictions made in dress code. But as this is a Hindu shrine, people are expected to be in modest attire. It is better to avoid revealing clothes such as shorts and sleeveless dresses for both men and women. Carrying a bottle of water, shades, and umbrella will be better for those who are visiting the shrine in June or July to attend the Ratha Yatra Festival.

Temple Rituals

Here the rituals are segregated in three major forms. The daily nitis, the special nitis and the festival nitis observed on special occasions.

The daily niti or ritual include- Mailama, Tadapalagi, Abakasa, Vesa, Sahana Mela, Rosa Homa, Surya Puja and the Dvarapala Puja, Sakala Dhupa, Madhyahna Dhupa and the Sandhya Dhupa.

Special Rituals

The Ratha Yatra followed by the Snana Yatra is the biggest festival in this temple. It is believed that after the snana yatra, the deity fall ill during which, the Lord is taken care by the Raj Vaidya for 15 days.This period is celebrated by the locals as the Ghurti Mela. Netradaan is done before the Gods are moved for the Snana Yatra.
