Legend
According to the legend, Mahamaya was conceived as the
seventh baby of Devaki and Vasudeva. The demon King Kansa threw Mahamaya on the
floor and Mahamaya's body part flew and divide in to several parts. The hand of
Mahamaya fell on this spot at Haryali Devi, Jasol Village. It is one of the 58
Siddh Peeths.
Architecture
The temple is a very humble structure made of brick and
mortar. Colors considered sacred in Hinduism, like Vermilion and yellow are
used for basic decoration. The structure is prone to adverse effects of the
climate at the height of 1400 m and hence, renovation and rebuilding is a
common practice for many temples at
Rudraprayag District. Also, as with most temples at remote locations,
Haryali Devi temple has a greater spiritual and religious significance rather
than the architectural significance.
Culture
Surrounded by hills and mountains, Rudraprayag is known for
its rich culture. The folklore, folk songs and folk dances of the place is
still preserved. People here still celebrate festivals traditionally. Diwali and Janmashtmi are the most popular
festival for Haryali Devi. Being one of the 5 Prayag, the region is of very
high significance for pilgrims.
