Located at Haripad, Alappuzha district, Sree Subrahmanya
Swamy temple is one of the oldest temples in Kerala dedicated to Lord
Kartikeya. The temple is also known as Dakshina Palani. The temple is believed
to date back before the start of Kaliyuga. The temple witnessed a major
outbreak of fire in the Malayalam Era year 1096. The temple was rebuilt during
the reign of King of Travancore Sree Chithira Thirunal Rama Varma.

Legend
Accoording to the legends, it is believed that the idol of
Lord Kartikeya was worshiped by Sage Parashuram for poojas. Sage Parashuram
left the idol in Kandanalloor in Govindamuttom Backwaters. All the landlords of
Eakachakra (the then Haripad) had vision regarding the idol and they recovered
it from the backwater. After Thiruvonam, a Vigraha Labdhi Jalolsavam is
conducted in Payippad river for three days in commemoration of retrieval of the
idol. The idol was kept for public viewing for Ara Nazhika (half an hour) under
a banyan tree that belonged to a Christian family,Tharakanmar. The temple was
consecrated on the Pushya star of Makara Masa.
Architecture
Sree Subrahmanya Swamy temple at Haripad is one among the
oldest temples of Kerala. The temple is one of the oldest and most important
temple devoted to Lord Subrahmanya. This holy shrine is built in the ancient
Kerala style architecture. The Subrahmanya idol with four arms is the biggest
of its kind designed after the sculptural pattern of the Buddhist era. The
temple has four Gopuras. It has golden flag mast, which is also the biggest of
its kind, on eastern side. The temple's Sanctum sanctorum is round in shape.
The temple compound also hosts a Koothambalam.
Culture
Haripad is close to the Arabian Sea and connects Mavelikkara
and Thrikkunnappuzha. It is the land of 'Mayura Sandesa', the land of snake
boats and the land of music, dance and drama. A main feature of Haripad which
attracts even the foreigners is the 'Payippad Jalolsavam'. It is believed the
idol of Lord Subrahmanya was brought from Kandalloor with escort of snake
boats. Payippad Jalolsavam is conducted to renew this memory
