Hanuman Ansh: What does a ₹1.7-crore film teach us about India?
Have you heard of this movie that has already returned more than 35x ROI to its makers in less than a month?
Hanuman Ansh, based on the life and teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, made under a budget of less than ₹ 2 crore, opened to a sedate start, with an overall collection of just about ₹10 lakh on August 7.
After two weeks, the film had collected only about ₹1.48 crore, by all means testing the waters between flop and barely break-even.
Then something extraordinary happened. Week 3 box-office collections stood at ₹10.4 crore. By week 4, the film began attracting audiences in extraordinary numbers, crossing ₹60 crore in India, and the journey is far from over.
There is another fascinating part of the story. The film began with only around 250 screens, dropped to roughly 25 within a week (flop), and eventually expanded to around 1,200 screens across India in its fourth week.
There are many more gems hidden inside the movie’s success, such as starting and ending every day of shooting by chanting the Hanuman Chalisa; or organizing bhandaras (community feasts) to generate word-of-mouth goodwill. In the words of debutant director Dr. Vishal Chaturvedi, “The audience have driven the film on their shoulders.”
Hanuman Ansh's journey is interesting because it wasn't built around a massive star cast, spectacular VFX or a ₹200-crore budget. People around the movie were virtually unknown in the mainstream circuit. It was built around faith, devotion and a story deeply connected to India's cultural memory.
And that is the larger lesson. India has thousands of stories around saints, temples, pilgrimages, traditions and sacred places that already live in people's hearts. Content creators don't always need to invent something bigger. Sometimes, they simply need to tell us authentically something deeply rooted in who we are, and make us feel “this story belongs to us.”
For those creating content around India's spiritual heritage, the opportunity is enormous. Our heritage isn't just history. It is living, breathing, collective content waiting to be explored and presented.
