In the small town of Unao in Datia district stand the unique Brahmanya temple, dedicated to the Sun God. The temple is believed to have been built by the King who ruled Datia, centuries ago. The locals of the place have immense belief in the power of the deity here. Prayers to the Lord here is believed to cure skin ailments.

Legend

Legends believe that a cow who used to be taken to the outskirts of Unao to be fed, would pour her milk at a particular point there. The cow belonged to a person of the Kacchi caste. The higher Lodhi caste men saw the incident and killed the cow. On the following night, Sun God appeared in the dreams of the king of Datia and told the king to dig the location, where the cow used to pour her milk.The King did so and found a statue of Surya dev. He built a temple in Unao and the owner of that cow was assigned the Priest. Since then only people belonging to Kachhi caste can be the main priest of the shrine.

Architecture

The Sun Temple at Unao in Madhya Pradesh is unique in its architecture. The deity stands on a brick platform covered with black plates. There is a protective brass cover for the image. Twenty-one triangles, representing the 21 phases of the Sun are engraved in the shrine. There is also a hawan bhavan in the shrine.

Culture

Datia is an ancient town, mentioned in the Mahabharata as Daityavakra. It has many places of Hindu and Jain worship as well as beautiful palaces and gardens.
