Among different other Buddhist Shrines in Tripura, the Benuban Vihar Temple is significant. Though, it stands to be one of the smallest Buddhist temples in the North-Eastern Indian state of Tripura, but the place is historically famous for having the metal idols of Bodhisattva and Lord Buddha, created in Burma long time back. The date of origin and the maker of the temple are not exactly known. But on visiting the Buddhist shrine, the enriched culture and heritage of the ancient Tripura can be explored.

Legend

No such legendary tales are revealed centering the Buddhist temple in West Tripura district. But the place bears the testimony of the fact that during the ancient times, Tripura maintained peace and harmony with the neighboring states by extending friendship and hospitality through culture and religion. In 2007, the Dalai Lama visited Benuban Bihar Temple in Tripura.

Architecture

The temple structure of Benuban Bihar has a Tripuri style in the design. The red colored sanctum dedicated to Lord Buddha has the metal Bodhisattva and Lord Buddha idols consecrated inside the sanctorum.  The place is surrounded by trees for which the place is called Benuban.

Culture

Special Rituals

Special prayers are offered to Lord Buddha on Buddha Jayanti at Benuban Bihar. The pilgrims wear white clothes and offer white payasa (sweet dish made of rice and milk) to Lord Buddha. On this auspicious day, the Buddhists maintain silence and peace.
