Legend

It was Swami Vivekananda, the iconoclast Youth Icon of India and one of the favorite disciples of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev who took the initiative to build the Ramakrishna Mission in memory of his Gurudev. Later on, he, with the assistance and constant support of his followers established the Belur Math. In 1898, Swamiji took the ashes of Sri Ramakrishna Paramhansa Dev's mortal body after his demise in an urn and consecrated the grounds with the sacred relics of Sri Ramakrishna. While worshipping, Swamiji uttered that "The blazing light of universal harmony that will emanate from here will flood the whole world." Today, the Belur Math is the Headquarters of the Global Ramakrishna Mission.

Architecture

During his years as a Parivrajak (traveler) sanyasi across India, America, and Europe Vivekananda explored various places and architectural brilliances of the monuments starting from the palaces of Rajasthan, Gujarat, Fatehpur-i-Sikri etc. Later on, along with his brother-monk and a civil engineer Swami Vijnanananda, they designed the architectural monument of Belur Math . The sanctum sanatorium of the temple has a large idol of Sri Ramakrishna Dev, the gurudev of the mission and that of swami Vivekananda himself.

There are other temples of Shree Sarada Devi, the Samadhi Enclosure, the old mission building, the room of Swami Vivekananda by the Hoogly River. The 40 acres land is beautifully decorated with gardens and flower beds.
