Legend

Sage Parasurama was once traveling along the western coast of India, and he reached the place where the temple is presently situated. He stepped into the lake for 'Sandhyavandana' during sunset. At that time he saw a bright light at a distance. Curious to know about the source of light, Parasurama waded into the lake and moved forward to the centre. Suddenly, he learnt that the origin of the light is 'Sapthamathrukkal' who were traveling across the lake on the top of the tortoise. However, since the water was disturbed by Parasurama's entry, the tortoise became immobile. The place where the tortoise stopped came to be known as 'Amaninnayidam' and later on become 'Ameda'. Since Sage Parasurama interrupted the journey of the 'Sapthamathrukkal', Sage Parasurama decided to construct a magnificent temple at the same place where the tortoise stopped. That is how Ameda temple came into being.
