Located at a height of 5300 feet in the holy cave of  the Trikuta Hills, resides Mata Vaishno Devi, eventuated by the converging spiritual strength of Kali, Lakshmi and Sarswathi. A geological study of the cave has indicated that it is millions of years old. Mythologically referred in Mahabharatha, it is believed that before the battle of Kurukshetra, Arjun, upon advice of Sri Krishna prayed to the Goddess and requested her blessings. Adjacent to the Trikuta Mountain and overlooking the abode of the Goddess are five stone structures, which are believed to be the rock symbols of the Pandavas. History records Guru Gobind Singh as having gone for pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi shrine.

Legend

As per the legend Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswati joined their spiritual strength to create Vaishnavi, who would merge with Vishnu at the appropriate time. This child born to Ratankar and his wife grew up with great spiritual strength. During his exile Lord Rama directed Vaishavi to set up an ashram at the base of Trikuta hills, to meditate and to strengthen her powers after which 'Vishnu' would merge her into himself. Vaishnavi immediately set off for the northern part of the country. She reached the foot of the Trikuta Hills where she set up an ashram for meditation.

Vaishno Devi Temple is part of  Nava Shakthipeeth Yatra and Vaishno Devi Yatra

Architecture

A pilgrim can get the first view of Bhawan of Maa Vaishno Devi around 1.5 Kms before on the way up.  The landscape surrounding the temple, the scenic beauty of the valleys are stunningly beautiful. The Holy Bhawan houses the Sanctum Sanctorum where the Goddess resides in the form of holy Pindies. It is in a natural rock form which has three heads at the top, considered to be Kali, Lakshmi and Saraswathi. Though these three heads emerge from one single rock, the Pindies are unmistakably different from one another. There are no statues or idols inside the Cave.
