Parli Vaijnath Temple is an ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The temple is part of famous 12 Jyotirlinga Darsan Yatra. The temple is also called as Vaidyanath temple. Vaidyanath temple was renovated in the year 1706 AD by Ahalyadevi Holkar.

Legend

According to mythology, it is said that Ravana on his way from Himalaya to Lanka was carrying this Jyotirling and Narad Muni conned him in to dropping the Linga at this very place. The Linga is believed to have been stuck here since then. From that day this shiv jyotirling is praised and is called as Swayambhu which means self-generated. The mountains, jungles and the rivers near by are full of useful medicinal herbs. That is why Parali JyotirLinga is also known as Vaidyanatha.

This Temple is part of famous 12 Jyotirlinga Darsan Yatra.

Architecture

The temple is built on a hill using stones. Temple is approximately at a height of 75-80 feets from ground level. Main entrance is from East and the magnificient door present there is brass plated. Surrounded by four strong walls, the temple consists corridors and a courtyard. The main gate of the temple also called "Mahadwar" has a Minaret nearby called a Prachi or Gawaksha, i.e., window. The temple has a wide staircase to enter. The temple renovated by Shiva devotee Ahalyadevi Holkar in the year 1706.

Culture

In addition to the traditional Maharashtrian way of life, though Parali is a place of pilgrimage for Shiva devotees, it is also a meeting point for Hari Hara. Lord Krishna's festivals too are celebrated along with Lord Shankara's festivals, with great festivity. Festivals of both Krishna and Shiva are celebrated here, as per the Indian Lunar Calendar.
