Situated in the holy city of Varanasi, is the temple of Bharat Mata, its uniqueness in the fact that this temple is dedicated to the devotion to our motherland. The temple dedicated to Mother India defines the spirit of nationalism that binds every Indian. Built before the partition it depicts undivided India. The temple was inaugurated by Mahatma Gandhi in 1936. While inaugurating he had conveyed his hope that the temple would go a long way to promote peace, love and unity.

Legend

The temple was born out of the devotion of a nationalist Babu Shiv Prasad Gupta and antiquarian Shri Durga Prasad Khatri. They wanted to construct a shrine dedicated to the Mother India, in Varanasi, a place dotted with many other temples.

This temple is part of famous Kashi - Varanasi Pilgrimage Yatra.

Architecture

Situated in the beautiful garden of Mahatma Gandhi Kasi Vidyapith is the Bharat Mata temple. The shrine is constructed in marble with long pillars supporting it. The main hall has a huge central courtyard where the map of undivided India carved on the floor. It is in 3D, with the mountains, plains, rivers all depicted perfectly. Photos of Gandhi and other freedom fighters are kept all around the courtyard.

Culture

The city of Varanasi believed to be found by Lord Shiva himself is closely associated with many stories of Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism. The place is the most revered site in the country with its many temples, ashrams and ghats. Cremation and rites for the departed are conducted in many of these Ghats.
