Located at Kottayam, Ramapuram Sree Rama Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Rama. The temple is part of Nalambalam Yatra Temples in Kottayam district. The temple is said to be more than 1000 years old.

Legend

According to the legends, Lord Rama rested at this place on his way to Lanka. When Rama reached this beautiful place, he felt it as an ideal place for his meditation. As Lakshmana, Bharatha and Sathrughna could not bear the disappearance of their beloved brother any longer, they too left Ayodhya and followed the path of their brother, assuming that their brother would have gone towards South. On finding him at Ramapuram, they too settled down nearby, thus explaining the four temples which are equi-distant from each other.

Architecture

Inside the Sree Rama temple, adjoining to the Sreerama Sreekovil, there are depicts of Siva Parvathi, and Saraswathi Devi.  Separate temples are there, for Bhagavathi (Bhadrakali), Maha Ganapathi and Sree Hanuman.

Culture

The culture of Kottayam is influenced mainly by the large Syrian Christian community. But it is also home to some the ancient temples in the State. The local culture is an interesting mix of the different ethnicities.

Sree Rama temple, Ramapuram is open from 5 AM to 10 AM and from 5 PM to 8 PM.

During Ramayana Masa (Karkkidakam), pooja timings are from 5 AM to 12 noon and 5 PM to 7:30 PM

Temple Rituals

Devotees should visit Sree Rama temple first. Then visit Amanakara Bharatha Temple, Koodappulam Lakshmana Temple and Methiri Sathrughna Temple. Then again visit Sree Rama temple to complete the nalambalam darsanam. The custom is to visit these temples before ucha pooja at Sri Rama Temple (around 11.30 AM).
