Urukunda Eranna Swamy Temple or Sri Lakshmi Narasimha Eranna Temple Urukunda is a famous temple situated in Urukunda, Kurnool District, Andhra Pradesh State. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Here, Lord Vishnu is worshipped as Lord Lakshmi Narasimaha Swamy and Lord Shiva as Veeranna Swamy. The idols of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu is placed under a peepal tree, which is sacred. Both Veerabadraswamy and Lakshmi Narasimha are worshipped as per the Veera Saiva tradition to date.

Legend

According to the legends, a Sage named Hiranya lived at this place and later he changed his name to Eranna. He practiced penance under the Peepal tree in Urukunda village. He strived hard for the development of Veera Saiva tradition and used to treat people from diseases. However, Sage Eranna disappeared one day and from that day onwards people started worshipping the peepal tree. They wanted to worship Eranna in the form of Veerabhadra and installed an idol under the tree. Later, they found an idol of Narasimha Swamy under the tree. Since then both idols are worshipped under this tree. Gradually, a temple was built there. Both Veerabadra swamy and Lakshmi Narasimha are worshipped as per the Veera Saiva tradition to date.

Architecture

The temple has no roof. The two idols of Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu is placed under a peepal tree. The mandapa and internal gopuram of the temple are sculpted with hindu god and goddess idols and animal images placed on mandpam and goupam area's.The temple flooring is made of rock stand stone.

Culture

The traditions and customs followed in Kurnool are same as in the other regions of Andhra Pradesh. The traditions and philosophies of the three major religions here, i,e. Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity, are a unique blend that has some elements of medieval Buddhism. Telugu is an ancient language and has a rich history of literature. Some of the most famous works have been written by Nannaya, Tikkana, Yerrapragada, Srinatha, Pothana, Molla, and Tarikonda Venkamamba. Telugu is famously known to be a musical language. Annamacharya and Tyagaraja, two famous composers of Carnatic music, composed most of their music using Telugu.
