Located at Markapur in Andhra Pradesh, Sri Lakshmi Chennakesava Swamy Temple is a famous pilgrimage center dedicated to Lord Chennakesava Swamy, a form of Lord Vishnu. Situated on the banks of the Gundlakamma river, the temple was built by the Vijayanagar rulers between 1405-1459 AD.

Legend

According to the legends, it is believed that Lord Vishnu killed Kesi, a demon at this place and Lord came to be called Kesava. The idol of Lord Vishnu is accompanied by his consort Goddess Lakshmi.

Architecture

The temple is built in Vijayanagara style of architecture. The huge Galigopuram of the temple is 135 ft tall. The temple is known for its superb carvings and the musical notes which emanate from its intricately sculpted pillars. The temple has a beautiful 40-pillered mandapam with carvings of Lord Krishna, Anjaneya, Garuda, Goddess Lakshmi & Lord Vigneshwara with their respective vahanas. There are 6 musical pillars in the Kalyana Mandapam that produce the 7 musical notes when tapped. The unique feature of the temple is that every year, from 16th December to 14th January, the sun's rays at dawn enter the sanctum sanctorum, through specially placed windows, and fall at the feet of the deity.

Famous Festival

Ekkadasi, Duserra, Sankranthi. During the car (chariot) festival each year, thousands of devotees visit the temple to participate in the chariot procession. The utsav (idol) of Lord Kesava is drawn in the chariot and taken around the town.

Morning Pooja and Aarati starts from 06:30 AM onwards and there after archana and daily seva programs to be performed to Lord Vishnu inside the temple
