Legend

According to the legends, King Nanda Chakravarthy used to visit Kasi every day at 4o clock in the morning and return back before dawn using a Mantra Shakti. The King told where he was going everyday in detail to his wife as she insisted on knowing about his absence in the morning. Next day, the King took his wife along with him to visit Kasi. The queen was having her monthly monthly and the Mantra Shakti lost its power due to that. The King sought the help of some Brahmins to help him return back. The Brahmins helped the King and Queen and in return the King promised to give the Brahmins land whenever they approach him. Some years later, when Kasi was hit by famine, the Brahmins came to meet the King Nanda Chakravarthy to give them the land as promised. However, the King forgot the promised and abuse the Brahmins. The Brahmins prayed to Goddess Sri Chamundeswari Mata to come down to Nandavara as the lonely witness for the king's promise. Pleased with the prayers of Brahmins, the Goddess appeared before them. The King realized his mistake and apologized to Goddess and the Brahmins. King Nanda Chakravarthy gave land to the Brahmins a promised and built a temple for Goddess Sri Chamundeswari Mata.

Architecture

The actual deity that was present in the temple was so fearful to watch with the human eye and the powerful aura it carried made many a heart fail on seeing it. Therefore, the doors of the garbha griha were permanently closed and then another deity was made, which resembled the actual deity in posture, only less fearful to look at. The temple structure was elevated so that the current deity sits exactly above the place where the original deity resides. To the east of the temple, there is a flight of stairs that go below to the place where the original garba griha existed but none is allowed to go there.
