Legend

According to the legends, Saint Kashyapa married Kadru and thousand serpants were born to her. Once Kadru asked her sons to go and hold the Uchai Srava, the white horse of  Lord Indra, to make Vinata ( the second wife of her husband), her servant maid. However, Kadru’s son’s refused to do that and she cursed her children to die in the serpant sacrifice to be performed by Janamejaya. Ananta, one of Kadru’s son went to do penance to save himself from the curse. Pleased by the devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before Ananta and accepted Ananta to serve as a comfortable bed for the Lord. Lord Vishnu blessed Ananta that the holy place will be named after Ananta as Sarpapura. Once Sage Narada challenged Lord Brahma that he would escape from the Lord Vishnu's illusion, from which none can escape. Sage Narada set out on pilgrimage and he came to  Sarpapura and decided to take a bath in the beautiful lake. Sage Narada became a beautiful woman after taking the dip in the lake and forgot all his past. At that time, Nakunda, the young prince of Pithapuram came there and fell in love with the woman. They got married and 60 children were born to them. However, the woman lost all her children later in a battle. She decided to take her life and went to the lake. After taking a dip in the lake, the woman became Sage Narada again. After recognizing his mistake, Sage Narada prayed Lord Vishnu to forgive him. Later, Narada installed the idol of Lord Vishnu along with his consort Lakshmi.
