Situated in Aragonda of Chittoor district, Andhra Pradesh, Veeranjaneya Temple is a famous ancient temple dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The temple is situated on the hill of Ardhagiri. The temple is 300 years old. The temple tank at Aragonda is called Sanjeevaraya Pushkarini Tank. It is believed that the water has the divine Sanjeevani elements infused into it.

Legend

According to the legends, during the battle with Ravana, Laxmana got injured and fell unconscious. Lord Hanuman was asked to bring the Sanjeevani herb for Laxman. As Hanuman was not aware of the herb, he picked the entire mountain and carried way back to the battlefield. On his way, a piece of the mountain fell here at this place. That was how the place came to be known as Ardhagiri.

Architecture

The temple is built on Dravidian style architecture. The temple walls have sculptures of several god and goddesses. The Main deity takes a north-facing posture. The special temple architecture allows the oblong rays of the sun to pass through the structure and fall only on the feet of the Lord Anjaneya. As the day progresses the sun rays strike each and every portion of the head, but finally disappearing beyond the head region. The temple tank at Aragonda is called Sanjeevaraya Pushkarini Tank.

Culture

Since it is a temple town, all the major Hindu festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi, Ugadi, Sankranti, Kartik Purnima and Deepawali are celebrated with great grandeur in Tirupati. The main festival of the town is the nine-day festival of Sri Venkateswara Brahmotsavams. This is an annual celebration that draws in lakhs of devotees. Tirupati Ganga Jatara is an important carnival that is held every year in May. Historical and architectural artefacts are kept in the Sri Venkateswara Museum.

Famous Festival

Hanuman Jayanthi and Full moon Day attracts thousands of pilgrims. It is said that prayers offered overnight on a full moon day are well received by the Lord. Cultural programmes are organized throughout night. Garlands made of betel leaves, black gram & tulasi, adorn the Lord.
