Legend

According to the legends, an old sweeper maid of the Pazhaya Sreekanteswaram Temple was resting under a tree after her day's work. She kept the broom and pot besides her. After the rest, when the maid tried to lift the pot, she found it difficult to move it from the place where she had kept it. She tried to break the pot, but at that time she spotted her pot to be bleeding. It is believed that the Lord Shiva gave darshan to the maid. A Swayambhu Siva Linga was spotted at the place where the lady put the pot. The incident was reported to the King and as instructed by the King, the new Sreekanteswaram Temple was built on that spot.

Architecture

The Sreekanteswaram Temple follows the patterns of Kerala architecture, which has got unique characteristics. It is in contrast to the Dravidian architecture as practiced in others of South India. Even though influence of Dravidian architecture is found in Kerala style, it also has prominent shades of Indian Vedic architectural science (Vastu Shastra) and also stamps of the historical influence of contact with maritime trading partners like Chinese, Arabs and Europeans. Classical Indian architectural works like the Tantrasamuchaya, Thachu-Shastra, Manushyalaya-Chandrika and Silparatna also find their influence in Kerala Architecture.

Culture

The culture of Kerala is a synthesis of Aryan and Dravidian cultures, developed and mixed for centuries, under influences from other parts of India and abroad. It has got a pre- historic genesis, but constant exposure to other cultures has instilled a cosmopolitan nature to it. Kerala welcomes and respects other cultures and assimilates good elements into its structure. It keeps a unique identity among other South Indian cultures
