Legend

According to the legends, a demon Madvasura, an ardent devotee of Hanuman used to work in the court of Ravana and during the war he left his body as he was unwilling to fight against Hanuman. In Dwaparayuga, he took birth as Madvakudu who used to work with Kauravas and he left the war zone seeing the flag of Hanuman on top of Arjuna's Chariot in the final battle. He again took birth in Kaliyuga as Madhvudu and started living on the banks of Yerrakaluva river. He used to perform Hanuman Japam daily in his Ashram after taking a bath. He was unable to perform his rituals due to old age. One day while going to take the bath he was about to fell in the river and suddenly a monkey held his hand and brought him back to the ashram. After that incident, the monkey used to come daily and hold the sage during bath and serve him fruits. Later, using his spiritual powers, the sage realized that the monkey was none other than Lord Hanuman, he prayed to Lord for his ignorance. Pleased with his prayers, Lord Hanuman appeared in his actual form and the sage asked the Lord to stay at this place. Thus, Lord self-manifested here with a fruit in one hand and Club (Gadha) in other and Sage to take the shape of a Maddi Tree.
