Patan Devi Temple
It is believed the name of Patna was given from the name
Patan Devi. According to the legendary tale of the Dakshya Yajna and the
self-immolation of Devi Sati, the right thigh of the Devi fell in Magadh and
the other associated smaller parts fell in Maharajganj and Chowk areas in Old
Patna city. The formation of Bari Patan Devi temple and Choti Patan Devi temple
was made centering this legend. The Bari Patan devi houses the idols of Goddess
Kali, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati and Bhairav consecrated on a throne.
According to the famous historian Buchanan, the Choti Patan
Devi Temple to be more important per religious views. Man Singh, the general of
Emperor Akbar placed three Brahmanical images of Ganesh, Vishnu and Surya
inside the Choti Patan Devi Temple.
Many believe that the temples were built around 9th-11th
Century A.D and later on was restored and rebuilt during the 16th-17th century
by Man Singh.

Legend
When Lord Vishnu sent His Sudarshan chakra to mutilate the
corpse of the self-immolated Devi Sati from the arms of Mahadev after the event
in the Dakshya Yajna, the right thigh of the Goddess fell in Magadh. Other few
smaller parts fell at the Maharajganj and Chowk areas in Old Patna city. Tantra
Charumani depicts that the smaller body parts became the images of Goddess
Mahakali, Mahalakshmi and Mahasaraswati enshrined in Bari Patan Devi Temple.
Later on a strange stone was found near the pond of the Bari Patan temple and
it was worshipped since then. Legend also says that Putraka, the founder of
Pataliputra was protected by the Goddess as well.
Architecture
The temples of Bari and Choti Patan temple were built in
Brahmanical style. The shrines had been famous over the centuries for its
religious and legendary epithet more than architectural significance.
Culture
Over the ages, Bihar has been the center of attraction
regarding its involvement since the days of Ramanayana and the Mahabharata. The
capital of the mighty Mauryan Empire was also at Pataliputra- which lies in the
present day Bihar. Even today, many
important relics of Emperor Chandra Gupta Maurya, Bindusara and the mightiest
of them all Emperor Ashoka are found.
Moreover, Bihar proudly houses the centers of learning like
the famous Nalanda University and the prestigious Vikramshila University during
the ancient times.
The state boasts on its flagship religious culture, the
enriched heritage that grew up associating different popular shrines in Bihar.

Temple Rituals
The daily worshipping of the Goddess at the Patan Devi
Mandir includes regular abhisheks in the morning and evening. Fruits and sweet
meats are offered as Prasad. Morning and evening aarti along with vedic mantras
and chimming of bells are performed by the priests. The priests also Tilak the
devotees with the divine vermillion called Rori. The Goddess are always wrapped
in sarees.
Special Rituals
Tuesday is most visited by the devotees here in the Patan
Devi temple. Special pujas are offered by the newlywed and the parents of the
new born. Devotees visit this temple on the fulfilling of their Mannats as
well. During the Dusshera festival, the temple remains packed with devotees.
There is a mela held at the temple on the occasion of the Vijayadashmi.
Goats and pigeons are sacrificed on the special occasions as
a part of rituals.
