The five fragments of Lingam

Legend

The legend regarding the origin of Pancharama kshetra describes the war between Lord Kumara Swamy and Tarakasura. As per the legend,  no one could win over  the Asura due to the power of the Sivalinga on his body. Kumara Swamy repeatedly broke the body of the demon into pieces but it re-unified again. That was when Lord Vishnu suggested to Kumara Swamy to first break the Shiva Lingam worn by the asura. As instructed, Kumara Swamy used his Aagneyastra to break the Lingam worn by Taraka. These five fragments were fixed at five places and temple built on them.  All the five Shivalinga in these five places have got scaly markings believed to be formed by the power of Agneyasthra. Over the years, the journey to these five shrines evolved into the holy Pancharama darshan Yatra.
