Dedicated to his loyal devotee

Legend

Please with the devotion of sage Shivada who performed penance to  Shiva for 1000 years, the Lord blessed him with the boon of an immortal child. Sage Shilada performed yagna  and a child appeared from the sacrificial fire who was named Nandi. By the age of seven, the boy grew well versed in Vedas and sacred texts. One day, Mitra and Varuna who chanced upon the boy remarked to the Sage that the boy would die at the age of eight. Unable to bear his father's sorrow on hearing this, the boy prayed to Lord Shiva. Shiva adorned the boy with a necklace and made him immortal. He also blessed that the boy would be worshipped along with him. Nandi got divine powers, transformed  into half-bull half-human and along with his father went to the Lord's abode. The nine shrines in the Nandyal region of Andhra Pradesh has been from the time of Vijayanagara empire, the circuit of the holy darshan which forms the Nava Nandi darshan yatra.
