Located in Mallavaram village in Prakasam district of Andhra Pradesh, Mallavaram Venkateswara Swamy Temple is a famous temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara. The temple was built in 15th century AD by the King Krishna Devaraya of Vijayanagara Dynasty. Later Addanki Reddy kings donated lands to the temple and the steps to the temples were built by the Reddy rulers.

Legend

According to the legends, once while traveling, Lord Venkateswara decided to rest on Tammavarapu Hill. However, the hill told Lord that it can't bear him. Hearing this an angered Venkateswara kicked the edge of the hill, part of which fell into Gundlakamma. At that time, Mallavaram Hill requested Lord to take rest on him and Lord accepted the request and took rest on the hill for some time. While leaving the place, Mallavaram requested the Lord to leave the velour of Lord on him and the Lord granted the wish of the Hill and left the place. Later, Sage Narada found the velour of the Lord and installed the idol here.

Architecture

The gopuram of the temple is sculpted with idols of gods and goddesses. The internal walls of the temple are sculpted with images of musical instruments and animals.

The area is located nearby a reservoir. Telugu language the preferred language of composition for Carnatic Music and made Andhra Pradesh the mother of all modern music.One can get a variety of designs blended in different kinds of colours. There is something fresh about the paintings, handicrafts, and handlooms which are merely sub-categories of the art and craft found at the place.
